As the cooler months arrive, so does flu season, and with it, an increased risk of illness in our community. At Soleil Health Medical Centre, we are encouraging everyone to protect themselves and their loved ones by getting the annual flu vaccine.
What is Influenza?
Influenza, commonly called the flu, is a very contagious infection that affects the airways, including the nose, throat and lungs. While it may seem like a mild illness, it can lead to serious complications, particularly for older adults, young children, pregnant women and people with certain medical conditions.
Why You Need a Flu Shot Every Year
The flu virus changes each year, so the vaccine is updated annually to match the most common strains expected to circulate. Getting vaccinated each year gives you the best chance of avoiding serious illness.
The flu vaccine is:
- Safe
- Effective
- The best way to protect yourself and those around you
If you are looking for a flu vaccine in Cottesloe, we make it easy with convenient appointments and a welcoming clinic environment.
Who Should Get the Flu Vaccine?
Annual flu vaccination is recommended for everyone aged six months and over.
Some people are eligible for a free flu vaccine under the National Immunisation Program, including:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged six months and over
- Children aged six months to under five years
- Pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy
- People aged 65 years and over
- People with certain Medical conditions
When Should You Get Vaccinated?
The ideal time to receive your flu vaccine is from April onwards to be protected during the peak flu season from June to September. Maximum protection occurs in the first three to four months following vaccination.
It is never too late to get your flu shot, as influenza can circulate in the community throughout the year. If you live in Perth’s western suburbs and need a flu clinic near you, we are here for you.
