Dr Lucas (Luc) Sanders is a Specialist CardioThoracic Surgeon

Dr Sanders performs most aspects of Cardiac and Thoracic surgery. His expertise includes:

  • Thoracic: video-assisted thoracic (VAT) – keyhole surgery: lung resections (lobectomy, wedge resection), lung saving / lung sparing surgery (segmentectomy), treatment of mediastinal (thymectomy) and pleural conditions.
  • Cardiac: valvular heart disease (Aortic, Mitral, Tricuspid valve), ascending aorta surgery, coronary artery bypass surgery, beating heart surgery for single-double vessel grafting, minimally invasive atrial fibrillation surgery (HyCASA / Convergent procedure), VAT left atrial appendage occlusion (AtriClip™).

As a leader and pioneer in minimally invasive thoracic surgery in Australia, Dr Sanders has performed a significant number of video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) lobectomies, making him one of the most experienced in Perth.

Dr Sanders commenced private practice in 2014 and has operated a full private practice since 2023. Originally from the Netherlands, he trained in South Africa and has practiced CardioThoracic Surgery since 1997. He moved to Australia in 2001 and worked at the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital as a consultant for many years.

He is dedicated to maintaining minimal wait times for both clinical appointments and surgeries, offering a weekly clinic at Mount Medical Centre.

His main focus is reducing the trauma patients perceive and may experience with undergoing surgery. His practice values are proficiency, availability and being informative to both medical practitioners and patients.

Conditions that can benefit from keyhole surgery can include:

  • All surgical lung diseases: recurrent pneumothorax, malignant pleural effusions, lung nodules and lung cancer
