Understanding Melanoma and Skin Cancer Risk
According to Cancer Council, Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. 2 out of 3 Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer throughout their life. On the other hand, melanoma is less common, but it is the most common cancer for Australians aged 20 to 39 years old. This is why regular skin checks, early detection and a visit to your nearest skin cancer clinic or dermatologist are crucial.
It’s important to understand that melanoma is not a different disease from skin cancer. Rather, it is a form of skin cancer with a high mortality rate, as it can become life-threatening in weeks if left untreated. This is why it’s important to be aware so you can actively take actions to protect your skin.
Why Acting Early Matters
How Early Detection Can Make Treatment Simpler
By detecting skin cancer or melanoma early, treatment becomes simpler. A comprehensive examination to assess your skin for any signs of skin cancer will be conducted by our GP Dr Kiran Shahid. Not only does it become easier to treat by avoiding more invasive or complicated procedures, but it also leads to a higher likelihood of successful treatment outcomes.
For instance, data from Cancer Australia shows that the five-year survival rate for melanoma is 90% when it is detected early. In comparison, it drops to approximately 15% to 20% when melanoma is diagnosed at an advanced stage, and it has spread all over the individual’s body.
