Frequently Asked Questions

What does a pelvic floor physiotherapist do?

A pelvic health physiotherapist specialises in the assessment and treatment of pelvic floor muscles and pelvic organs. This includes managing pelvic pain, pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence, bowel dysfunction and sexual pain. Women's health physiotherapy focuses on improving pelvic floor function and supporting long term pelvic health.

When should I see a women's health physiotherapist?

You may benefit from seeing a women's health physiotherapist if you currently experience pelvic pain, bladder and bowel problems, urinary leakage, pelvic organ prolapse or discomfort during sexual intercourse. You may also benefit from seeing a women’s health physiotherapist if you are experiencing hormonal fluctuations, chronic constipation, pregnancy, postpartum or menopause, even if you do not have symptoms.

What happens during a pelvic physiotherapy appointment?

Your first appointment with our women's health physiotherapist includes a sixty-minute initial assessment to understand your symptoms, medical history and pelvic health concerns. This may involve assessing pelvic floor muscles, reviewing bladder and bowel habits, and discussing factors such as pregnancy, hormonal changes or pelvic pain.

Following the assessment, your physiotherapist will recommend personalised treatment options and management strategies. This may include pelvic floor exercises, clinical pilates, physiotherapy treatment and self management advice to support long term pelvic health and improve symptoms.

Can physiotherapy help pelvic organ prolapse?

Yes. Pelvic physiotherapy can help manage pelvic organ prolapse by managing intra-abdominal pressure, improving bowel habits and strengthening the hip, core and lower body muscles to support pelvic organs. Pelvic floor exercises and physiotherapy management strategies, including pessary support, can help reduce symptoms and improve daily comfort.

Is the clinic wheelchair accessible?

Yes, Soleil Health provides wheelchair access throughout the facility.
