Let’s be honest, keeping up with all your health checks can feel overwhelming. Between work, family, and everyday life, it’s easy to let routine appointments slide. But your health matters, and staying on top of regular checks is one of the most powerful things you can do for your long-term wellbeing.

Here’s a simple guide to the key health checks every woman should know about.

  1. Heart Health Check

Recommended every 2 years from age 45 (or earlier for high-risk groups). Your GP will check your blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar, and assess lifestyle factors that impact your heart.

  1. Diabetes Screening

A simple blood test can detect high blood sugar levels. Recommended every 3 years from age 40, or annually for First Nations women from age 18.

  1. Cervical Screening

Every 5 years for women and people with a cervix aged 25–74. You can choose a doctor-collected or self-collected test.

  1. Sexual Health Check

Includes STI testing, contraception advice, and support for any symptoms or concerns. Recommended if you’re sexually active or starting a new relationship.

  1. Breast Cancer Screening

Self-check regularly and report any changes to your GP. Mammograms are recommended every 2 years from age 50 to 74.

  1. Bowel Cancer Screening

At-home test every 2 years from age 45 to 74. Detects early signs of bowel cancer with high treatment success if caught early.

  1. Bone Health Assessment

Discussed annually after menopause. A bone density scan may be recommended for women over 70 or those at risk of osteoporosis.

  1. Immunisations

Stay up to date with flu shots, COVID-19 boosters, travel vaccines, and other recommended immunisations.

Other Checks to Consider

Some checks are worth adding to your calendar, no matter your age:

  • Skin check (yearly, especially in the WA sun)
  • Eye test (every 2 years or as needed)
  • Hearing test (if any changes)
  • Dental check-up (every 6–12 months)
  • Pre-pregnancy planning check if you’re thinking of having a baby
